Sparkling Taps Put the Delivery Van Back in the POU Water Cooler Market
By Zenith Water Dispense Team ยท
A 600 gram CO2 cylinder pours about 80 litres of sparkling water. On a busy office tap that is a change roughly every three weeks, or nineteen a year on one machine. Scale that across a fleet and the bottle-free promise turns back into a returnable container route, which is the one thing bottled operators already do better than anyone.

I had been reading the sparkling boom as a product story. Then I read a cylinder spec sheet. One figure turned a hardware upgrade into a route problem.
A 600 gram CO2 cylinder pours about 80 litres of sparkling water. Borg & Overstrom publishes that rating on its own product page, measured at 4 bar. Its larger 1300 gram cylinder scales to roughly 175 litres. Those are small volumes for a busy office.
Take one tap pouring 30 litres of sparkling a week. On the small cylinder that is a change every three weeks. Call it nineteen changes a year, on a single machine. A mains-fed tap that pours sparkling still sits on a delivery schedule.
What 80 litres looks like across a fleet
Scale the number up. Five hundred sparkling taps at nineteen changes a year is about 9,500 cylinder deliveries. CO2 cylinders are pressure vessels, so every empty has to come back. The real figure is closer to 19,000 movements a year.
Now compare that with a bottled site. An office drinking 12,500 litres of plain water a year takes about 660 bottles at 19 litres each. Delivered fortnightly, that is 26 visits. One sparkling tap can trigger nearly as many scheduled visits a year as a bottled cooler.
The volumes differ enormously. The visit count ends up close.
The pitch that quietly stopped being true
For a decade the mains-fed sales line has been simple. No bottles to store, no van to let in. That line was accurate when the machine poured chilled and ambient water only.
Sparkling changed the machine. Integrated tap systems (ITS) are plumbed-in units that pour boiling, chilled and sparkling water. Zenith's own tracking, published in Refreshment, made them Europe's fastest growing segment in 2024, up 5.6%. The average commercial ITS unit costs about €2,930. That is close to three times a point of use (POU, mains-fed) cooler.
Operators are selling a premium machine on a promise that the sparkling option no longer keeps. Some sites do handle their own swaps. That holds until a cylinder runs dry on a Friday. It also holds only while facilities is willing to store pressurised gas.
Bottled operators already own the hard part
Sparkling service is really a returnable container route. Bottled operators have run one for thirty years. They have depots, vehicle capacity, swap discipline and dangerous goods handling.
A pure POU business often has a technician calendar and little else. Adding 9,500 cylinder movements to a technician calendar is a big change. Bottled dispense has a structural advantage in sparkling that almost nobody is pricing.
That advantage runs alongside the places bottled already wins. Factory floors, building sites, temporary offices and back of house all have hard or absent mains connections. A bottle still answers those better than a tap does.
Where the load arrives first
It arrives unevenly. Zenith's database covers more than 30 markets and is built on direct operator interviews and local data partnerships. Denmark has the highest tap penetration in Europe. Sweden and the Netherlands sit behind it.
The markets furthest into taps are the ones whose operators wound down delivery infrastructure earliest. Southern Europe sits at the other end. Spain runs overwhelmingly on bottled dispense and keeps growing. Its operators hold the route and do not yet face the tap demand.
What to do before the fleet gets big
At 200 taps the cylinder line is a rounding error. At 2,000 it is a department with a fleet budget. Model the cylinder route now, while the estate is still small enough to redesign.
Three practical routes exist. Large cylinders roughly halve the swap count. Bulk CO2 on site removes the swap entirely for high-volume accounts. Sub-contracting the swap to a bottled operator turns your cost into someone else's dense route.
For buyers the change is sharper. An asset-light POU book with a heavy sparkling mix carries a route after all. Ask what the cylinder line costs per machine per year, and ask who carries it. That answer will move a multiple further than the hardware spec does.
