Nearly all of Western Europe's water cooler market growth came from one country
By Zenith Water Dispense Team ยท
Western Europe's installed base of water dispensers grew about 3% in 2025. Published figures show a single country supplied most of the added units. Strip it out and the region looks close to flat, which changes what a regional growth rate is worth inside a plan.

The one question I keep putting to operators is this. Is your market growing, or does it just sit next to one that is? Western Europe added about 118,000 water dispensers last year. Spain supplied more than 100,000 of them.
What the published figures say
Trade title Refreshment covered Zenith Global Commercial's 2026 West Europe and East Europe reports on 24 August. Europe's installed base of water dispensers passed 6.6 million units in 2025. That is growth of around 2% on the year.
Western Europe rose 3% to more than 4 million units. It added roughly 118,000 units in the year. Over five years the region has compounded at 4.2% a year.
Spain passed 1 million units in 2025. It was the country's thirteenth straight year of growth. Spain added more than 100,000 net placements during the year.
The subtraction nobody has run
Put those two figures next to each other. Western Europe added about 118,000 units. Spain supplied more than 100,000 of them.
That leaves roughly 18,000 units for every other Western European market combined. Those markets hold close to 3 million units between them. Eighteen thousand on 3 million is about 0.6%.
One caution before anyone quotes that. Spain's number is a net placement count. The regional number is a change in installed base. The two are not measured the same way, so treat the subtraction as directional. The direction is not in doubt. Western Europe outside Spain barely moved.
Eastern Europe is the faster market once you measure it properly
Eastern Europe grew 0.6% to almost 2.55 million units. That is its first rise since 2021. The headline is held down by Russia and Ukraine, which both sit below pre-war levels.
Take those two out and the region grew 1.5% to around 1.13 million units. That base is up 5.8% since 2020.
So Western Europe without Spain grew about 0.6%, and Eastern Europe without Russia and Ukraine grew 1.5%. The map most boards work from has the fast half in the wrong place.
The growth is bottled, and it lives in homes
Here is the part that will annoy some readers. BWD means bottled water dispense, the coolers that take 19-litre bottles. Western Europe's bottled base grew 3.4% last year, and Iberia carried that growth.
Spain's engine is residential subscription. Operators such as Aquaservice deliver bottled water to households on a plan. Zenith forecasts Spain close to 1.4 million units by 2030.
POU means point of use, the mains-fed cooler. It grew 2.0% in Western Europe. ITS means instant tap systems, the boiling and sparkling taps plumbed into a counter. That grew 5.8%.
The single country carrying Western European growth is doing it with bottled coolers in people's kitchens. In that market bottled is the growth line. It works because somebody built a delivery route to homes and kept it full.
Our own forecast says the last five years do not repeat
Western Europe compounded at 4.2% a year over five years. The forecast to 2030 is 2.9% a year. We are publishing a slowdown in our own numbers. It is worth reading before it lands in a plan.
Europe as a whole is forecast to approach 7.5 million units by 2030, or about 2.5% a year. Eastern Europe's 1.8% carries a stated assumption that the war in Ukraine ends inside the window.
We can see the country detail because operators submit their unit numbers to us directly. Local data partners in each market fill in the rest.
What to do before your next plan
Stop planning off a regional rate. Ask which country supplied the units, then ask which channel inside that country did the work. A regional growth number belongs to whoever owns the concentration inside it.
Sell to offices in Western Europe outside Iberia and your market grew about half a percent. That is a share fight. Budget for it as one.
Want the growth Spain is showing? The real question is whether you could run a residential route. Most European operators cannot. An honest answer there changes the plan.
Buyers should be sharper still. A Western European asset priced on a 3% regional growth rate is being priced on Spain. Ask where the units came from before you accept the multiple.
